An account number is a unique string of numbers, letters, and other characters that identify a specific financial account. Almost all financial transactions make use of account numbers. Examples of account numbers include routing numbers and credit card numbers.

Transit numbers: Sometimes called branch numbers, these account numbers are always five digits. They represent the branch where you first opened your account. Bank or institution numbers: These three-digit numbers identify the bank or financial institution that hosts your account.

Bank account numbers typically consist of eight to 12 digits, but some account numbers could even contain up to 17 digits.

Be sure to include the 01 when referring to the Checking account, avoiding spaces or hyphens, so the account number is a total of ten digits. In this example, the Checking account number is 0112345678 — with 01 indicating Checking, 1234567 indicating the base account number, and 8 indicating the Checking suffix.

Your bank account number is made up of 24 characters: 20 of those are the customer account code (CAC), which is unique for each person in any bank. Two characters are control numbers, and the remaining two indicate the country that the bank account is based in.

A bank account number is similar to a phone number, and it isn't shared by anyone else at your bank. Every bank has its system for assigning account numbers. Some banks assign a seemingly random number to each customer account. Other banks might use a customer number with a hyphen for each account.

Your bank account number is the primary identifier for the bank account. This is unique in nature and no two banks or account holders can have the same account number. Banks use different starting codes for their branches for easy segregation.
