A 2016 meta-analysis of scientific studies found that FSC certification in the tropics has reduced degradation and improved labor and environmental conditions in the affected forest — no small accomplishment.

There are two types of FSC certification: Forest Management and Chain of Custody. In both types of certification, independent FSC-accredited Certification Bodies ("certifiers") verify that all FSC-certified forests conform to the requirements contained within an FSC forest management standard.

The FSC product classification (FSC-STD-40-004a) V2-1 is an addendum to the FSC Chain of Custody standard that provides the English nomenclatures and codes that certificate holders shall use to classify their product group/types. The purpose of this revision process is to update the FSC product classifications.

"You can find the FSC tree-and-checkmark logo on certain wood and paper products at major home improvement and office supply retailers," says Jack Hurd, director of The Nature Conservancy's forest trade program.

FSC has developed two main kinds of certification: Forest Management (FM) certification and Chain of Custody (CoC) certification.

In short, a product can be certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), which means it meets the "gold standard" ethical production. The wood is harvested from forests that are responsibly managed, socially beneficial, environmentally conscious, and economically viable.

The FSC label is a stamp given to specific products by the Forest Stewardship Council, indicating the materials used in production are recyclable and sustainably sourced. The symbol also signals that the product passes the council's high environmental and social standards.
