The Arizona ELP Standards help students to possess a linguistic foundation for the academic English that is needed to meet the language demands and complexity of content- area instruction of math, science, and social studies.

The Arizona ELPS are constructed around five Proficiency Level Descriptors. Listed from the lowest to the highest designations, these are Pre- Emergent, Emergent, Basic, Low Intermediate, and High Intermediate.

There are 2 AZELLA test administrations in one school year. The AZELLA Placement Test is administered from the start of the school year through mid-May of the same school year as needed.

AZELLA is used for both placement and reassessment purposes. Students who have been identified as second language learners on the Home Language Survey take the AZELLA placement test, and the students' proficiency scores determine appropriate placement for instruction.

The Arizona English Language Learner Assessment (AZELLA) is a standards-based assessment that meets both state and federal requirements to measure students' English language proficiency. AZELLA is used for both placement and reassessment purposes.

The AZELLA proficiency levels are: (1) Pre-Emergent, (2) Emergent, (3) Basic, (4) Intermediate, and (5) Proficient. An Initial English Proficient student whose overall AZELLA score is Proficient does not participate in the ELD program.

Practice with the Sample Tests. Your child's teacher will be able to give you information about how to access the correct sample test. Testing usually takes 2-3 days to complete. There are four sections of the AZELLA test.
