While schools are not required to keep education records for any set period of time under federal law, California's state laws differ. Here, school districts must keep educational records for three years after they stop being “useful” — which typically means three years after your child has left the district.

One common way to get transcripts is to request them directly from your high school. You can typically do this in person or over the phone, and you'll need to be prepared to provide relevant identification information as well as the year you graduated.

Districts must maintain high school transcripts permanently (19 Texas Administrative Code (TAC) §74.14(a)).

To obtain a transcript from a California public school, you will need to contact the school directly. If the school is closed, we suggest contacting the local school district or the County Office of Education for assistance. Contact information for these entities may be obtained from the California School Directory.

Student records are generally maintained at the last school of attendance for a period of up to five years after the student's scheduled graduation date. After the five years, the records are transferred to the Student Records Center.

High school transcripts can vary in price, and oftentimes are free. When high schools charge for them, they usually cost between $5 and $10 per copy. Typically, if a school offers online transcripts, they are cheaper than transcripts on paper.

In California, a 12th grader must have at least 220 credits in order to graduate from high school. In order to receive a diploma, students must complete a total of 220 credits including at least 80 credits in core subjects and an additional 40 credits in elective courses.

A transcript request form is a document used by students or former students to get a copy of their academic records from educational institutions such as high schools or colleges. The transcript can be official or unofficial.
