During his eight years in the West, Smith made the effective discovery of South Pass and was the first American to travel overland to California, the first to cross the Sierra Nevadas and the Great Basin, and the first to reach Oregon by a journey up the California coast.

Jedediah Smith, in full Jedediah Strong Smith, (born January 6, 1799, Bainbridge, New York, U.S.—died May 27, 1831, near the Cimarron River), trader and explorer who was the first American to enter California from the east and return from it using an overland route.

Smith proved himself a leader quickly on the trail. On his second expedition, he was attacked by a grizzly bear. The bear came out of the thicket and mauled Smith violently, throwing him to the ground, smashing his ribs and literally ripping off his scalp.

Benjamin was born on January 7 1658, in Barnstable, Barnstable, MA. They had 6 children: Dorcas Hawes (born Smith), Mary Luce (born Smith) and 4 other children. Jedediah passed away on month day 1736, at age 80 at death place, Massachusetts. She was buried at burial place, Massachusetts.

From May to June 1827, explorer and trapper Jedediah Smith found a route from California's central valley to the Great Salt Lake Valley in Utah. He became the first European American to completely cross what is now Nevada. Because Smith's journal and map have never been found, his exact route is unknown.

By mid-May, the party's water supplies were almost exhausted, and the men started separating each day to search for waterholes. On May 27, 1831, Smith was riding alone when a hunting party of Comanche Native Americans attacked and killed him.
