Get English Year 5

Maths. In maths, there is an emphasis on fractions, decimals, and percentages in this year. There is also an expectation that they will know all of the written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

In schools in England, Year 5 is for children 9–10 years old, and is the third year of Key Stage 2. Children will be encouraged to take on more responsibility and become more independent. In this year schools will often start to focus on getting your child ready for transition to secondary school.

Year 5 students expand their knowledge of the key areas of mathematics, especially of fractions and decimals. They increasingly use models, symbols and pictures to represent and communicate mathematical concepts.

What will my child learn in year 5 maths lessons? Number and Place Value; Addition and Subtraction; Multiplication and Division; Fractions; Measurement; Properties of Shape; Position and Direction; Statistics.

In Year 5, children will read a range of different genres. They will continue to use their skills of inference of characters' motives and feelings and will start to think about figurative language and how it is used. They will learn to spell a variety of more sophisticated words with different prefixes and suffixes.

In Year 5, your child will learn to: choose the right vocabulary and grammar for their writing. write a story with interesting vocabulary and dialogue. write non-fiction with features such as headings, captions, bullet points, subheadings and diagrams. use a consistent tense throughout their piece.

In year 5, your child should be planning and structuring their creative writing so that it has a clear beginning, middle and end as well as a sound storyline (plot). Your child will also be creating detailed settings, setting the mood, tone and atmosphere of the piece of writing.
