Get No Marriage Status

If your license was never filed and cannot be found, more steps must be taken for the marriage to be recognized legally. You can request a duplicate license, which then needs to be signed again by both spouses and the officiant.

You can get the Letter of No Record / Single Status from the County/ City Clerk or through the contracted vendor VitalChek. It is the documentation establishing No Record of Marriage on file within the County where the letter is issued.

Order forms are available online on the MDHHS website, too. Contact the county clerk in the county where the event occurred.

(1) A person who is 18 years of age or older may contract marriage. A person who is 16 years of age but is less than 18 years of age may contract marriage with the written consent of 1 of the parents of the person or the person's legal guardian, as provided in this section.

After the wedding ceremony, the original copy of the marriage license must be returned to the County Clerk's office for recording.

The license is valid anywhere in the state for thirty-three (33) days from the date of application.

In Michigan – Marriage records are filed in the county where the license was ISSUED. You can obtain a certified copy of a marriage in person or by mail. For Mail requests, fill out the Marriage Certificate Request Form below, and mail it to the Branch County Clerk with the appropriate fee.

If either you or your future spouse is a resident of Michigan, then you must apply for the license in your county of residence, regardless of where in the state the wedding will take place. However, if neither person is a resident, then you'll have to apply for the license in the county where the wedding will occur.
