Assessments can include reviewing the child's physical movement and positioning, and also visual and hearing development components, such as reaching and grasping. After doing these tests the occupational therapist will be able to identify any areas of need and develop a treatment plan.

Objective. We designed a simple rating instrument, the Occupational Therapy Task Observation Scale (OTTOS)©, to facilitate evaluation and documentation of patient performance during occupational therapy task groups and to improve the communication between occupational therapists and other treatment team members.

To complete an evaluation we conduct an interview, complete standardized and nonstandardized tests, and make clinical observations. Prior to coming in, families will complete paperwork about their child's medical history, birth and development, and areas of concern.

Observations help to gather additional information about a client's occupational performance. More specifically, observations can be used to identify if a client is processing information necessary to perform a particular activity in the context of their environment.

In general, OTs are responsible for a wide range of duties and tasks related to patient care. Depending on the setting in which they work, the roles of an OT often include: Evaluating a patient's condition and needs. Developing treatment plans to address a patient's needs and help them meet specific goals.

Occupational therapy assessments look at specific areas of a client's functioning and needs. This can include fine motor skills, gross motor skills, visual perceptual skills, sensory integration, executive functioning and self care skills.
