1. The law requires a student athlete who may have a concussion during a practice or game to be removed from the activity for the remainder of the day. 2. Any athlete removed for this reason must receive a written note from a medical doctor trained in the management of concussion before returning to practice.

Our providers typically consider clearance once the athlete is: Free of concussion symptoms for at least 24 hours. Off any medications started for concussion symptoms. Attending full days of school and tolerating a full academic workload (if applicable, depending on the time of year)

Most students will be advised by a healthcare provider to rest for no more than 2-3 days after the injury. This is when symptoms, like headaches or fatigue, are usually most severe. Like recovering from some other injuries, students recovering from a concussion may need to rest.

Grade 3 – We recommend that athletes wait at least 10 days before they participate in any activity that can result in head trauma. They also must be asymptomatic and successfully complete the five-day return-to-play activity protocol.

It's recommended that individuals with a concussion have a 1-2 day period of rest followed by progressive increases in activity. This return to activity should always be monitored by a trained healthcare provider. Most providers will try to see their patients 24-72 hours after the injury to assess their functioning.

The athlete must be symptom-free for 24 hours at the current level of activity before moving on to the next step. If one or more symptoms return, the player needs to go back to the previous level of activity with no symptoms for at least 24 hours before trying to do more.
