To purchase a handgun or pistol in the state of North Carolina, either a non-expired North Carolina Pistol Purchase Permit or a copy of a non-expired North Carolina Concealed Carry Permit is required.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina residents can now buy a handgun without getting a permit from a local sheriff, after the Republican-controlled legislature on Wednesday overrode the Democratic governor's veto — a first since 2018.

1. Firearms ID Card- $ 5.00- Initial Only, no fee for a duplicate card. 2. Permit to Purchase a Handgun- $ 2.00 each (These fees may be paid by check, or money order payable to the law enforcement agency where the application is submitted.)

A criminal background check will be performed on all applicants. Most applications are processed within seven (7) days. However, N.C. state statute allows up to thirty (30) days for the processing of handgun permit applications.

A Pistol Purchase Permit allows you to purchase a single handgun with a single valid purchase permit in North Carolina and is only available from the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office for citizens who reside in Brunswick County. It does not entitle the applicant to carry a concealed handgun.

Approved permits will be issued Monday through Friday between 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, excluding state holidays. There are no limits on the number of permits an applicant may obtain. Permits are valid for five years. Each Permit costs $5.00 and payment is due at the time of the permit application.

The waiting period to obtain the permit itself can be as long as 30 days (45 days for non-residents) while the permit application is processed.
