A Qualified Builder has completed an apprenticeship and gained a National Certificate in Carpentry, usually a NZCEA qualification. A Qualified Builder is: Completed their 3-4 years apprenticeship to gain a carpentry qualification. No compulsory ongoing training or knowledge maintenance.

A 'record of building work' (also called a 'Memorandum' or just 'record of work') is written by each licensed building practitioner (LBP) that carried out or supervised each part of the RBW on the building. It details the work that was done.

'Restricted building work' is work that's critical to make a home structurally sound and weathertight. You must use Licensed Building Practitioners (LBPs) to design and carry out this work. LBPs are registered and required to keep their skills and knowledge up to date.

LBPs are building practitioners who have been assessed as competent to carry out building work essential to the structure or weathertightness of residential buildings.

A RoW is designed to be a documented record of who carried out or supervised RBW under a building consent. It protects you by listing only what you did, removing future uncertainly in situations where multiple contractors have performed or supervised RBW on one site.

If you are an LBP, you are accountable for all building work you carry out or supervise, even if that work is not RBW. If you are supervising building work, you need to provide enough support to ensure the work is done competently and is carried out ing to the building consent.

Entry requirements There are no specific requirements to become a building contractor, but most are experienced carpenters who have worked in the building and construction industry. A New Zealand Certificate in Carpentry (Level 4) or other building qualification may be useful.
