How long does it take to become a tattoo artist, you might ask? Usually, it takes around three years, if not longer. The State of Oregon requires 360 hours of instruction to prepare for state licensure. Enrollment priority is given to those with art training or extensive art experience AND a GREAT attitude. Instruction is divided into two sections totaling 360 hours.

Registered Body Art Practitioners You must be 18 years of age. You must have completed a Cal/ OSHA compliant Blood-Borne Pathogen Training course (PDF) You must submit an application (PDF-Fillable Form) to Environmental Health.

Oregon requires a license for tattoo artists. You can obtain a license by graduating from an Oregon licensed tattooing career school, or by reciprocity to show that you currently hold a license as a tattoo artist. A standard Oregon tattoo artist license costs $50.
