Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology (FAAN) – The highest and most respected class of membership is awarded to selected board-certified neurologists and research neuroscientists who have demonstrated high achievements in teaching, clinical practice, administration and/or research.

The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) is the world's largest professional association of neurologists. Founded in 1948, the AAN now represents over 40,000 members and is dedicated to promoting the highest quality patient-centered neurologic care and enhancing member career satisfaction.

The Fellow designation is a formal distinction available to AAN members and recognizes special achievement in the neurosciences, the clinical practice of neurology, or academic or administrative neurology. Fellows may be elected only from among candidates who meet the qualifying criteria.

The AAN represents over 38,000 neurologists and neuroscience professionals consisting of 28,000 US members and 8,000 international members.

Two options for nurse practitioners (NPs) are the Fellows of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP) and the Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN).

The word neurologic is preferred to neurological when used as an adjective. The following rules apply when referring to the AAN, AAN Foundation, AEI, and their products and services: Place the before AAN, Academy, American Academy of Neurology, AAN Foundation, etc. if the organization is being used as a noun.
