Day nurseries provide childcare in the UK for children aged between naught and five years. Most providers are in the private sector but you can also find public and non-profit nurseries. Some workplaces also offer day nursery care.

Tax-Free Childcare is a government scheme to help working parents with the cost of childcare in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It can pay for: registered childminders, nurseries and nannies. registered breakfast, after-school clubs and playschemes, holiday schemes.

Childcare and the law Most providers caring for children under 8 years old for more than 2 hours a day in England must register with Ofsted. If you're a childminder, you can choose to register with a childminder agency instead. To register, you need to be 18 or over and have the right to work in the United Kingdom.

All 3 to 4-year-olds in England can get 570 free hours per year. It's usually taken as 15 hours a week for 38 weeks of the year, but you can choose to take fewer hours over more weeks, for example.
