Definition. A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is an evaluation of a person's functional capacity in relation to a job's demands. The FCE involves aspects of lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, balance, fine motor, and cardiovascular tolerance.

Functional Abilities Evaluation FAE is a systematic process of assessing an individual's physical capacities and functional abilities. The FAE matches human performance levels to the demands of a specific job or work activity or occupation. The FAE establishes the physical level of work an individual can perform.

Functional assessments include a combination of subjective questioning as well as various objective functional tests. Some of the test that may be performed as part of a functional/musculoskeletal assessments may include: Postural observation – observation of neck, back and foot alignment.

An FCE is an extensive physical examination that determines a person's baseline functional capabilities and assesses a person's ability to return to work.
