When Grade Forgiveness is applied to a student's record, the grade earned during the first attempt of the course is no longer factored in to the student's GPA but it will still appear on the student's transcript. In other words, the new grade replaces the old grade in the calculation of a student's GPA.

Grade forgiveness can only be applied once per course for a maximum of two courses (not to exceed 8 credits) on a student's undergraduate academic record, without regard to the number of degrees sought.

In most cases, when you pass the class, the units count on your transcript toward reaching your graduation requirements. If you fail, though, the zero points can harm your GPA since you are adding zero points into your GPA calculation.

Referring back to the basic formula above, use the student's total grade points earned (33) divided by the 16 credits attempted means the student has a GPA of 2.06. If a student fails a class, there are no grade points earned for that course.

Grade forgiveness allows students to retake a limited number of classes for a higher grade. Through the forgiveness policy, a student may retake a class to earn a higher grade and raise their GPA if the following conditions are met.

Minimum overall GPA of 3.2 in the current FGCU undergraduate program or better. Combined bachelor's-master's programs may require a higher GPA than the 3.2 minimum. Students must meet other admissions criteria as defined by the approved combined bachelor's-master's programs.

Retaking a course may raise your student's GPA (grade point average). In many schools, if a student retakes a course, the most recent grade will replace the lower grade in the student's GPA. The earlier, lower grade will remain on the transcript, but will not be included in the GPA.

The forgiveness policy may be used a maximum of four (4) times, only once for any course, which allows a student to use the forgiveness for four different courses.

Can I finish college with one F or do I have to retake the class? You can still finish college with one F on your transcript as long as you make up those lost credits, either by retaking the class or taking another class in its stead.

One F does more damage than bringing down your g.p.a. so you will need to retake that class and bring the grade up, whether you are in high school or college.

If the D is in a 1-credit-hour course, the student will earn a 3.76 GPA. If the A is in a 1-credit-hour course, they will earn a 3.3 GPA.
