Iowa law requires all individual “Construction Contractors” and businesses performing “construction” work to be registered with the Iowa Division of Labor if they earn at least $2,000 a year from construction.

Iowa does not have state licensing requirements for a general contractors license. However, any construction contractor (individual or business) who makes $2,000 or more a year doing construction work, must register online with the Iowa Division of Labor or by calling 1-515-242-5871.

A contractor performs a taxable service. The contractor must pay tax on the materials at the time they are purchased. The contractor collects tax on both the labor and the materials from the customer.

The general requirements for a contractor license are as follows: Must be at least 18 years old. Must provide documentation of criminal convictions related to the practice of the profession, which shall include a full explanation from the applicant. Must file an application and submit appropriate fees.

Register for construction contractors, contractors, or both licenses. Complete and submit the application(s) along with necessary fees. Schedule and pass your exam. Acquire a surety bond through an authorized surety company, and present information to be issued a Division of Labor Contractor Registration Number.

Iowa does not require a handyman to hold a state license. However, if you do business in the state and make more than $2,000 per year, you must register as a contractor with the Iowa Division of Labor.
