Wind loads, seismic conditions, and roof loads (such as snow loads) are important considerations in the design of a storage tank. Tanks of wider diameter and shorter height are better suited for areas that experience greater seismic activity and higher wind loads.

Category 3 tanks have no spill control and no CRDM in place, and should be given priority especially when no inspection history is available. All category 3 tanks 1,100 gallons or less must have formal inspections and leak testing done every 10 years.

UL-142 is a national standard that covers most types of tanks for flammable and combustible liquids. It also applies to those tanks that are made from steel and located above ground. These standards apply for various shaped tanks including rectangular, round, or cylindrical.

The general types of atmospheric storage tanks (AST) in use may be open top tanks (OTT), fixed-roof tanks (FRT), external floating-roof tanks (EFRT), or internal floating-roof tanks (IFRT). Depending on the product, a closed floating-roof tank (CFRT) may even be selected.
