It teaches sound reasoning methods and problem-solving strategies that work in all sorts of contexts, including new and unfamiliar ones. Philosophy also teaches students to think creatively and to question conventional wisdom.

It teaches critical thinking, close reading, clear writing, and logical analysis; it uses these to understand the language we use to describe the world, and our place within it. Different areas of philosophy are distinguished by the questions they ask. Do our senses accurately describe reality?

Introduces philosophy through the study of different conceptions of human being. Concepts of the person are tied to specific views of reality, the meaning and value of life, and our capacity to know ourselves and the world.

AMNE 151 (3) Greek and Roman Mythology Greek and Roman mythology and its interpretation. Emphasis on ancient texts read in English translation. Credit will be granted for only one of CLST 105 or AMNE 151.

The course introduces students to the foundational theories and methods of philosophical analysis, emphasizing critical examination of some fundamental principles and problems of philosophy, with examples from the major areas of philosophy: metaphysics, epistemology, and ethics.

A Philosophy major provides students with a thorough grounding in the core subdisciplines of philosophy: epistemology (the theory of knowledge), metaphysics (the theory of being), logic (the theory of reason and inference), value theory (including ethics, politics and aesthetics) and the history of philosophy.

An introduction to the central branches of philosophy, such as logic, theory of knowledge, metaphysics, ethics, and political philosophy. Writings from the central figures in the history of Western and non-Western philosophy, as well as contemporary philosophers, may be considered.
