C-E-R Writing Overview C-E-R writing is a framework that consists of three parts: Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning.

What is Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning? The claim, evidence, and reasoning model is a method for teaching students to think and write scientifically. Students are encouraged to not just give a one-word response, but to make a claim, justify their answer with data, and connect the data with scientific reasoning.

Claim, evidence, and reasoning are three essential components for writing an argumentative essay. The claim offers an answer to a question or problem; the evidence provides important facts that support the claim; and the reasoning clearly explains why and how the evidence supports the claim.

The reasoning is the explanation of “why and how” the evidence supports the claim. It should include an explanation of the underlying science concept that produced the evidence or data.

Example: "Video games contribute to youth violence." In this case, video games is the topic, believing they cause youth violence is your observation. This can also be called a topic sentence, a thesis, or even just an opinion. 2.

Claims are statements that support the thesis statement, but like the thesis statement, are not facts. Because a claim is not a fact, it requires supporting evidence. Evidence is factual information that shows a claim is true.

For example: Burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide, methane, and particles into the air. (This data supports the claim that fossil fuels are harmful to the environment.) REASONING – The reasoning explains “how” or “why” the evidence supports this claim.

Your students might suggest this explanation: Air is matter (claim). We found that the weight of the ball increased each time we pumped more air into it (evidence). This shows that air has weight, one of the characteristics of matter (reasoning).
