Schools and kura sometimes refer to them as year 0 for the second half of the year. If they start school in the first half of the year they will be referred to as year 1. If you think your child is not in the right year at their school or kura, talk to your child's teacher or to the principal.

Usually, an intermediate school receives children from a contributing primary school for Year 7 and 8. Although sometimes there are 'junior high schools' which offer Year 7–10, or composite schools offering Year 7–13.

Years 0 to 8 are the primary years. Children in these years are generally aged 5 to 12 years.

Intermediate school: Years 7–8 (ages 10–13). Only two non-state intermediate schools exist. Secondary school: Years 9–13 (ages 13–18). Year 7–13 secondary school or Secondary school with intermediate: Years 7–13 (ages 10–18).

Your child's primary education starts at Year 1 and goes to Year 8 (around 5–12 years of age). Your child's secondary education goes from Year 9 to Year 13 (around 13–17 years of age).
