The forest cover is broadly classified in 4 classes, namely very dense forest, moderately dense forest, open forest and mangrove.

As defined by the Deckerd Report, the optimum size of regions was one which had a span of control over fifteen to nineteen forests. In response to the span of control concept, Chief Cliff and his staff decided that Region 7 would be eliminated and its forests divided among Regions 8 and 9.

In terms of percentage of forest cover with total geographical area, Wayanad has the highest forest cover of 83.3%, followed by Idukki and Pathanamthitta.

The area comprises of Rupin and Supin valleys that form important catchment for the Tones River, the main tributary of Yamuna River.

The NFS has nine Regions, each with a headquarters often referred to as an RO (Regional Office). The highest authority in each Regional Office is the Regional Forester, who reports to the Chief. Among other duties, Regional Office staff coordinate activities within the Region and allocate budgets to the forests.

Forests have different zones or layers: the forest floor, the understory, the canopy, and the emerging layer.

The Govind Wildlife Sanctuary or Govind Pashu Vihar National Park and Sanctuary are located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. Established in 1955 the sanctuary covers an area of 958 sq km and includes mountains like Swargarohini, Black Peak, and Bandarpunch.

As per the Champion & Seth Classification of Forest Types (1968), the forests in Kerala are divided into seven Type Groups which are further divided into 16 Forest Types.
