The aim is to help identify which senses may be impacted upon and why this may result in the child having difficulties dealing with certain sensory stimulus and/or environments and why an individual may present with certain behaviours.

People typically fall into 2 different sensory profiles, which include over-sensitive or under-sensitive. However, some may have a combination of both or a mixed sensitivity, meaning that while they may crave certain sensations, they may also avoid others.

What Are Sensory Needs? Sensory needs or issues occur when a child has difficulties receiving and responding to information from their senses. Children with sensory issues may have find it hard to cope with anything that triggers their senses, including sound, light touch, taste, or smell.

Sensory preferences have been described in relation to sound, vision, taste, touch, and smell. They also include vestibular (movement and balance), proprioception (body awareness) or interoception (how our body feels inside). Differences can include hypersensitivity, hyposensitivity, and general sensory overload.

Sensory Preference refers to the type of brain an individual possesses in relation to sensory stimuli (visual, auditory, kinesthetic), including the type of sensory data that registers most quickly.

A “sensory preference” is when a child either dislikes or craves a specific sensation. This could be anything from sounds, smells, tastes, sights, textures, or movements. Some children might dislike the feeling of a scratchy tag in their clothing.
