When a TRS retiree dies, the designated beneficiary is entitled to receive a lump sum survivor benefit payment of $10,000.

Under Death Benefit #1, the benefit would equal 1/12 of the member's last 12 months' regularly earned salary multiplied by each full year of Total Service Credit—to a maximum of three times the member's annual salary; this maximum would apply to members who have 36 or more years of Total Service Credit.

The TRS retirement plan provides service and disability retirement benefits and death benefits.

If a member is retired and passes away, the beneficiary will receive a $10,000 survivor benefit or $2,500 and a monthly payment, depending on who the beneficiary is. In addition to the lump sum, the beneficiary can be eligible for a monthly annuity payment depending on what option the member selected upon retirement.

The Survivor's Benefit Program provides a death benefit to the beneficiaries of eligible retired New York State employees. For most retirees, the amount is $3,000. Payment(s) from your State of Texas Retirement plan/account Your designated beneficiary, estate or heirs will get a $5,000 lump-sum death benefit if they submit a claim for it. This benefit is in addition to any life insurance or other survivor benefits to your beneficiary.

A lump-sum death payment is meant to help defray the costs of the employee's burial expenses. It can only be paid to a widow(er) who was living with the employee when he or she died or to the person who paid all or part of the employee's burial expenses.
