The Readiness Assurance Process centers on administering two short multiple-choice tests. The first test is taken individually, and then the same test is taken again by the students in their teams. It sounds simple, but it has powerful results. The RAP prepares students for the activities that follow.

The Readiness Assurance Process (RAP) occurs at the beginning of each major instructional unit. The RAP ensures that students are held accountable for completing the pre-class reading and have acquired the foundational knowledge that they will need for the in-class team work that follows.

Asking and answering questions, administering a pre-test or survey, and conducting careful observations are all ways to help determine the zone of proximal development for different students/participants.

Learner readiness is the ability of a student to take new information and process it in a way that changes behaviors or leads to desired academic outcomes. In essence, it is the ability for an individual to actively engage in the learning process and take personal responsibility for learned information.

In general context, learner readiness is often used to define the ability of a learner to acquire knowledge and initiate in behavior change which lead to effective and successful learning outcomes.

The Individual Readiness Assurance Test (iRAT) is a short (5-10 question – 5 minute) quiz taken by an individual student prior to the start of a flipped or project-based class.
