Those who fail to surrender their Indian passport after acquiring foreign citizenship may face the following penalties. $250 penalty if passport expired after January 1, 2005 and 3 or more years have passed between naturalization date and present date.

The applicant would need to submit the following : Duly filled-in application form. Original Indian passport with one copy. Copy of the Canadian Citizenship certificate. Copy of Canadian passport, if held. Copy of Record of Landing. Applicable Fees.

Once you acquire foreign citizenship you have to surrender your last Indian passport to Indian Consulate for cancellation. Consulate will cancel it and returned to you along with a 'Renunciation/Surrender Certificate' issued by Consulate.

Where the applications are complete in all respects, the process time would be 2 weeks (10 working days) from the date of receipt of such applications in the Consulate.
