The game is played using a deck of cards – each of the 52 cards corresponds to a week during the quiet year. Each card triggers certain events – bringing bad news, good omens, project delays and sudden changes in luck. At the end of the quiet year, the Frost Shepherds will come, ending the game.

The Quiet Year is a map game. You define the struggles of a community living after the collapse of civilization, and attempt to build something good within their quiet year. Every decision and every action is set against a backdrop of dwindling time and rising concern.

TQY is a post-apocalyptic exercise focused on a community's actions and internal negotiations. It's intended to be played out over the course of a single two to four hour session. To begin, players take a regular deck of playing cards (minus the jokers), and divide them by suits.

The Quiet Year is a map-drawing tabletop role-playing game for 2-4 players about community building, by Avery Alder. The illustrations are by Ariel Norris, and Jackson Tegu is credited with additional design insights. It was independently published in 2013 by Buried Without Ceremony.
