FSIS: Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), an agency of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), is the public health regulatory agency responsible for ensuring that United States' commercial supply of meat, poultry, and egg products is safe, wholesome, and correctly labeled and packaged.

Information. An inspection mark on the label lets you know the meat or poultry product has been inspected and that it is safe, wholesome, and correctly labeled. See FSIS' Inspection Programs.

Inspected establishments must maintain and follow written Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP) and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) plans. In addition to inspecting the meat products, inspection personnel inspect the facilities and equipment to ensure sanitary conditions are maintained.

NOTE: FSIS Form 9295-1 is a bilingual, watermarked, legal size document that is signed by the PHV (same PHV that approves the export task and signs the 9060-5 and any supplemental documents) and is to accompany all meat and poultry exports to China.

The Federal Meat Inspection Act (FMIA) requires that all meat sold commercially be inspected and passed to ensure that it is safe, wholesome, and properly labeled. The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is responsible for providing this inspection.

The current food safety laws are enforced by the FDA and FSIS. The FDA regulates all food manufactured in the United States, with the exception of the meat, poultry, and egg products that are regulated by FSIS. The following is a list of all food safety acts, amendments, and laws put into place in the United States.

The USDA oversees over meat, poultry, and egg products. However, the majority of the food supply (80% or more) is regulated by FDA. FDA is responsible for dairy, seafood, produce, packaged foods, bottled water, and whole eggs.
