The international border is now open Student, visitor and work visa applications are open. The maritime border is now open, and eligible travellers can enter New Zealand by sea.

School-age visitor visa holders can attend primary, secondary or intermediate school for a single period of study for up to 3 months per calendar year. However, they can't study in term 1 of a school year if they took a single period of study in term 4 of the previous year.

Children are entitled to free enrolment and education at any state school from their 5th birthday to 1 January after their 19th birthday. They can start primary school between the ages of 5 and 6, but they must be enrolled at school by their 6th birthday¹. Some students might attend school after their 19th birthday.

Every person between the ages of 5 and 19 has an entitlement to free enrolment and free education in State and State-integrated schools if they are a domestic student. Anyone who does not fall within one of these categories is an international student with no automatic entitlement to education in New Zealand.
