Here's how long a credit card authorization lasts: Hotels: Typically, holds are released a few days after checkout. Car rentals: Usually, holds are released when you return the car or a few days after.

Generally speaking, however, pre-authorizations typically expire after five days. If the pre-auth expires before settlement, the merchant can try submitting a new charge. There's a chance that the cardholder will no longer have that much available credit, though, meaning the new transaction could get declined.

Credit card authorization forms are standard at most hotels when the guest's name differs from the cardholder's — as is common with business accounts. The form protects the hotel by ensuring funds are available to pay for the room and that the charges will be approved.

In the case of credit cards, holds may last as long as thirty days, depending on the issuing bank.

Most debit card transactions have a hold time between one and eight business days. For credit card transactions, though, the hold might last as long as a month. The card networks understand that this can create problems for both merchants and cardholders.

Upon check-in, a valid guest photo I.D. and credit/debit card must be present. All major credit/debit cards are accepted. A $100.00 incidentals authorization/deposit is required of all guests at check-in time.
