The seeds come in individual home garden packets for $1.50 each, and the lab ships them directly to home addresses. To order seeds, contact the UH Seed Laboratory at seed@ctahr.hawaii.edu or call (808) 956-7890. Seeds that are currently available are on the UH Seed Laboratory website.

All seeds imported into the United States must be accompanied by a phytosanitary certificate, unless specifically exempted by a permit that allows importation without one, such as the Small Lots of Seed permit (See Seeds with Additional Requirements).

So, what's the catch? Well, starter plants are certainly more expensive than a packet of seeds. Sometimes one single starter plant can cost the same as a package of 200 seeds of the same plant. So, while starter plants may save you a lot of time, seeds will save you a little cash.

Seeds and dried parts of bamboo and grass are unrestricted. Bromeliad family (pineapple, bromeliads, and tillandsia): Plants and parts require a permit and a certificate of origin and/or treatment. Some plants require quarantine. Seeds and flasks of bromeliads (except pineapple) are unrestricted.
