The Jharkhand government (JREDA) is providing a 40% solar subsidy in the state of Jharkhand directly to the residential customers through its approved local channel partners. As per the deal, solar subsidy is available only for on-grid solar power plants and no subsidies are available in hybrid or offgrid plants.

After seven years, Jharkhand has re-jigged its policy to promote solar energy in the state. The new policy announced in July 2022 is ambitious in its scope. It has nearly doubled its target to 4000 MW of solar power by 2026, up from 2650 MW by 2020.

For the creation of a conductive environment for the development of Solar Energy in the state, State Government had notified solar policy on 10th August 2015. The policy titled, “Jharkhand State Solar Power Policy 2015” would remain in operation till 5 years or till the issuance of any new policy.

Jharkhand is rich in renewable resources because of the abundance of waterfalls. Hydroelectricity is an important renewable energy source. In the case of a waterfall, the gravitational potential energy of water first changes into the kinetic energy of water.

Jharkhand has one of the lowest installed capacities of renewable energy in eastern India with 97 Megawatt of clean energy production capacity. The government, in a 2015 policy document, had aimed for 2,650 MW of solar energy by 2020. So far, it has not met even half this target.

It has nearly doubled its target to 4000 MW of solar power by 2026, up from 2650 MW by 2020. The state also announced a separate policy to promote rooftop solar in the intervening years. Of the 4000 MW of solar power, 3000 MW is utility-scale (including 900 MW of floating solar and 400 MW of canal-top solar).

ing to latest data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), up to March 31 this year, Jharkhand has a total of 97.14 Megawatt of installed capacity of power from renewable energy sources (RES), which makes up 3.5 percent of the 2734.64 Megawatt of installed capacity of power utilities in the state.
