How to recycle aerosols. Ensure cans are completely empty before recycling. Do not pierce, crush or flatten them. Detach any loose or easily removable parts, such as the lid, and dispose of them with the rest of your recycling.

Aerosol cans that are either partially or completely full must be separated from your other recyclables and general waste, as they are considered hazardous. Most councils collect aerosols via household collection; otherwise, they can be taken to your local recycling facility and put into the right banks.

Florida universal wastes include most rechargeable batteries; pesticides that are recalled or collected under a pesticide waste collection program; mercury-containing devices such as manometers and switches; mercury-containing lamps such as fluorescent lamps that are recycled, and aerosol cans.

Any facility or activity which discharges wastes into waters of the state, or which will reasonably be expected to be a source of water pollution, must obtain a permit from DEP .

Please make sure the aerosol cans are EMPTY and did not previously contain hazardous waste materials. If the aerosol cans once contained hazardous materials, like paint or bug spray, they are not recyclable. Place them in your garbage cart.

To dispose of aerosol cans, you should: Ensure the aerosol cans are completely empty of all products before disposal. Remove the lid and place this alongside the rest of your dry mixed recyclables – as this doesn't need to go through the same recycling process as the metal can itself.
