The SOL end-of-course reading test is being used as the high school test for reading. As such, all students must take the SOL end-of-course reading test. Virginia has selected the Biology test as the high school science test to meet ESSA requirements.

Overall scaled scores are reported on a scale of 0-600. A student must attain an overall scaled score of 400 or higher to pass the test. If a student attains an overall scaled score of 500 or higher, the student is considered to have performed at an advanced level on the test.

The hypothesis is an educated guess as to what will happen during your experiment. The hypothesis is often written using the words "IF" and "THEN." For example, "If I do not study, then I will fail the test." The "if' and "then" statements reflect your independent and dependent variables.

All SOL test results have a Scaled Score which ranges from 0 to 600. A Scaled Score of 400 is required to pass.

A score of 400-600 is "passing" on a SOL test and qualifies a student for verified credit. Students who score between 350-399 on a SOL test automatically have an opportunity for an expedited retake during the same testing window. Expedited retakes are optional.

For example, if two schools had the same SOL pass rate of 95 (out of 100) One could use the average SOL scores to refine the comparison: School A: 95 % pass rate – average score of 450, and. School B: 95 % pass rate – average score of 500 (which is considered “advanced proficiency”).

The passing score for the Virginia Biology SOL is 400-499 (proficient) and 500-600 (advanced). The number of questions vary from 25-28 correct responses to pass the SOL.
