If you are a payer, you can amend a direct debit by contacting the merchant taking your payment. If you are a merchant, the steps you take to amend a direct debit will depend on various factors. In general, any amendments must be made by 4pm three working days before the payment is due to be charged.

When you set up a Direct Debit, you tell your bank or building society to let an organisation take money from your account. The organisation can collect however much you owe them. But they have to tell you in advance (usually ten working days) how much they'll take, when, and how often.

A Direct Debit Instruction (DDI) is authorisation by a payer to their bank for funds to be withdrawn from their account to pay a service user (a business, or rarely an individual).

If you need to cancel a Direct Debit, simply write to your bank or building society. It is also a good idea to send a copy to the organisation concerned. Your bank or building society will generally require at least a day's notice before the Direct Debit is due to be paid.

Log into the Internet Bank. Select your credit card. Choose Other account services from the options in the menu. Choose Amend Direct Debit.
