A death certificate is issued after the examination is completed. Occasionally, more extensive testing is required, in which case a pending death certificate may be issued. A final death certificate will be issued following completion of all tests and investigation. This may take eight to 10 weeks.

Death certificates are available in the county Vital Records office where the death occurred. Pursuant to Colorado Revised Statutes, 1982, 25-2-118 and as defined by Colorado Board of Health Rules and Regulations, applicant must have a direct and tangible interest in the record requested.

In Colorado, death certificates can be completed only by physicians or coroners.
