The learner's permit entitles the permittee to drive a motor vehicle on the public ways. The permittee must have the learner's permit in immediate possession while driving on the public ways.

OBTAINING A DRIVERS LICENSE Provide proof that you are a Maine resident. Provide proof that you are a U.S. citizen or are in the country lawfully (legal presence) Provide two forms of proof of identity; one must indicate your date of birth and the other must bear your written signature. Complete a vision screening.

If you are under 21 years of age, you are required to complete 70 hours of practice driving, which must include 10 hours of night driving, and have held your learner's permit for at least six months. The 70 hours of practice driving must begin after you have been issued a learner's permit.

You must be at least 15 years of age. If under 18 years of age, complete an approved driver education course. Obtain a learner's permit by successfully completing a driver knowledge examination. A learner's permit is generally valid for 2 years.

The permit allows the individual to operate a vehicle when accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 20 years of age and has held a valid license for two years.

Any person who can prove they are in the U.S. legally and show proof of a physical address in Maine may apply for an official state non-driver identification card. If your social security number is not on file with the Secretary of State, you must provide your social security number.

Permittees ages 21 or older They do not have to hold the permit for 6 months, they do not have to log driving hours, and they can take a road test immediately to obtain their driver's license.
