Get Grassland Habitat Mapping - Chitwan National Park

It is meant for protecting the habitats of many endangered wildlife and the rich wealth of the Churia, and inner Terai valley ecosystems. UNESCO designated RCNP as a World Heritage Site in November 1984 under the World Heritage Convention recognizing its unique biological resources.

Grassland habitats are places that receive more rain than deserts but less precipitation than forests. Most of the plants here are grasses, which don't need as much water as forest vegetation.

Terrestrial habitats in Chitwan continue to support many threatened mammals which act as indicators of overall ecosystem health as well as species specific values represented by the site's flagship species in the Bengal tiger and greater one-horned rhinoceros.

More than 50 species are found here including some of the world's tallest grasses like the elephant grass called Saccharum ravennae, giant cane (Arundo donax), khagra reed (Phragmites karka) and several species of true grasses.

The Chitwan valley is characterized by tropical and subtropical forests. Roughly 70 percent of park vegetative cover is Sal (Shorea robusta) forest, a moist deciduous vegetation type of the terai region. The remaining vegetation types include grassland, riverine forest and Sal with Chir pine Pinus roxburghii.

It is also prime habitat for the Bengal Tiger and supports a viable source population of this endangered species. Exceptionally high in species diversity, the park harbours 31% of mammals, 61% of birds, 34% of amphibians and reptiles, and 65% of fishes recorded in Nepal.

Flora & Fauna: The Chitwan valley consists of tropical and subtropical forests. Sal forests cover 70 percent of the park. Sal leaves are used locally for plates in festivals and religious offerings. Grasslands cover 20 percent of the park.
