SNAP counts cash income from all sources, including earned income (before payroll taxes are deducted) and unearned income, such as cash assistance, Social Security, unemployment insurance, and child support.

Your net income is your gross income minus any allowable deductions. And assets are "countable resources" like cash, money in a bank account, and certain vehicles. For fiscal year 2023 (Oct. 1, 2022 – Sept. 30, 2023), a two-member household with a net monthly income of $1,526 (100% of poverty) might qualify for SNAP.

The Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023 law recently passed by Congress ends emergency allotments after the February 2023 issuance. This means by March 2023, all SNAP households' benefits will return to normal amounts, without the added supplement.

Proof of income from your job – Last 3 pay stubs or paychecks, a statement from your employer, or self-employment records. Bank accounts – The most current statement for all accounts. Medical costs – Bills, receipts, or statements from health-care providers (doctors, hospitals, drug stores, etc.).

In the U.S. the SNAP office has to make a decision on a person's application within 30 days of the date of submission. The benefits are then usually issued from the original date of the application. Applicants are given 10 days after the interview to provide more documents.
