Most safety deposit boxes come with two keys. If you lose one, you can use the duplicate to access your box. In the case where both keys are lost, the bank will need to organize a professional locksmith to force open the box in your presence (and at your expense).

California Probate Code section 331(a) requires that the person seeking access to a safe deposit box be in the possession of a key. 9.1. 1 In the event of the death of the Hirer, the legal personal representative on producing the Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration and the original key(s) to the Box, may have access to and open the Box and remove all of the contents, and this act shall automatically terminate the Agreement.

Arizona statute states that once a safe deposit box lessee dies, the box “may be opened by two employees of the lessor [e.g., bank] in the presence of any person claiming to be interested in the contents”.
