The Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS) measures the level of proficiency that students have achieved based on the Washington State Science and Learning Standards (WSSLS), formally known as the Next Generation Science Standards.

The WASL assessment consisted of examinations over four subjects (reading, mathematics, science, and writing) with four different types of questions (multiple-choice, short-answer, essay, and problem solving). It was given to students from third through eighth grades and tenth grade.

State tests include the following: Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA): English language arts (ELA) and math tests in grades 3–8 and 10 are required for federal and state accountability. The high school ELA and math assessments can also be used to meet a student's graduation pathway requirement.

Spring 2023 Testing In spring 2023, students in grades 5, 8, and 11 are expected to take the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS), and students in grades 3-8 and 10 are expected to take the Smarter Balanced ELA and math assessments.

Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) Washington state requires all districts to administer the Smarter Balanced assessments each spring. These tests: Measure how well students are meeting College and Career Readiness Standards.

The SBAC, otherwise known as the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium, is a next-generation assessment system that was designed to measure student learning against the Common Core State Standards.
