Who experiences homelessness? People of all genders, races, ages, and socioeconomic backgrounds experience homelessness. Among those sleeping in city shelters, 15,000 are single men, more than 4,500 are single women and 35,000 are adults or children in families.

We estimate that residences located within 500 feet of a shelter sell for less than residences that are between 500 feet and 1,000 feet of that shelter: 7.1 percent less if the nearest shelter is for adults and 6.4 percent less if the shelter is for families with children.

A temporary homeless shelter community may include supportive and self-sufficiency development services. A “homeless shelter” shall include a parking lot owned or leased by a city, county, or city and county specifically identified as one allowed for safe parking by homeless and unstably housed individuals.
