Across Texas, family members and friends have stepped up to provide homes for children whose parents cannot care for them. These “kinship care” arrangements include all children who receive care from grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles, cousins and close family friends for a given period of time.

In Texas, foster parents get a monthly payment between $812 and $2,773 for every child they care for. You do get a larger check by caring for multiple kids at once, but Texas law limits foster care households to 6 total children, including kids who are already living at your home.

Informal kinship care means a living arrangement in which a relative of a child, who is not in the care, custody, or guardianship of the local department of social services, provides for the care and custody of the child due to a serious family hardship. Legal custody is not required.

The benefits for kinship caregivers include a maximum of eight payments. The first payment is $525 per child, followed by $300 payments per child every six months for the next seven payments. The maximum payment is $2,625 within a 48-month time period.

A: Financial reimbursement, along with medical and dental coverage, will vary dependant on the needs of the child or children in your care. On average, foster families will receive around $675 per child per month.

Is there childcare (daycare) assistance? The State of Texas provides daycare assistance for many foster children so long as all caregivers in the home meet the employment requirements.

In this way, a family member may take in a grandchild, nephew, niece, cousin, or even sibling to provide them with a safe and loving home. The decision to adopt a family member can complete your family and restore family bonds. You might hear this type of adoption referred to as “kinship adoption.”

Currently the TANF grant is a minimum of $141 per child. Child only benefits are not time limited. Child support enforcement is mandatory for both biological parents if TANF is granted to kinship families.
