Get Hardship Permits : Oregon Driver & Motor Vehicle Services

If convicted of DUII, you will need to obtain a recommendation from the convicting judge in order to get a hardship permit; this means making convincing arguments that the issuance of the hardship permit is in the best interests of the public as well as yourself.

A hardship permit is available for some driver license suspensions or for a driver revoked as a habitual offender. A hardship permit allows you to drive a non-commercial motor vehicle only.

You cannot get a hardship permit if your license is revoked for a traffic crime.

A hardship permit is essentially a limited driver license sometimes available to Oregon licensed drivers who face a suspension of their Oregon driver license. A hardship permit may be available to you if your license is suspended and you had a valid Oregon Driver License at the time of your suspension.

Following a DUI breath test failure or breath test refusal in Oregon, or following a DUI criminal conviction in Oregon, most drivers are eligible for an Oregon Hardship Permit (sometimes incorrectly but informally referred to as a “Hardship Licence” or “Work Permit”).

You may qualify for a hardship permit under certain conditions. You usually can qualify if your license is suspended following a traffic crime, which includes misdemeanors such as a hit and run, driving under the influence, and reckless driving.

No hardship permit is available on a second or subsequent DUII conviction. Any wait time served on an Implied Consent suspension (see reverse side) resulting from the same arrest will be credited to this wait time. Otherwise, THE wait time beginS when the suspension begins.
