What should you eat before your PET Scan? Protein-rich diet: Meat, chicken, fish, shellfish, crab, nuts, sunflower seeds, and eggs. Non-starchy vegetables: Broccoli, spinach, green beans, cabbage, cauliflower, cucumber, and mushrooms. Beverages: Diet soda and zero-calorie drinks.

Preparation - P.E.T. -You should not eat or drink (except water) for at least 6 hours before your test and no caffeine, nicotine, or alcohol for at least 12 hours before. - Avoid strenuous exercise for at least one day prior to the P.E.T. Scan.

You will need to lie on your back for approximately 30 minutes for the PET/CT. If that could cause you discomfort, you may take an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) before the procedure begins.

Preparation for the Procedure You will be asked to follow the Limited Carbohydrate diet for the previous 24 hours before the date of your appointment. Do not eat or drink anything, except water, for 6 hours before the exam. You may drink water, as much water as you can would be helpful, until arrival.

Can I drink alcohol after a PET/CT scan? There is no restriction on drinking alcohol shortly after the scan.

Please avoid eating starchy foods such as: bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, sugars, etc. Do not eat or drink anything after midnight, EXCEPT WATER. Please drink as much water as you prefer. If your appointment is at 12:30 p.m. or later, you may have a high protein snack, to be finished by 6:30 a.m.

Wear comfortable clothing for the scan. You may also need to change from your regular clothing into a hospital gown. Leave valuables at home, such as jewelry or a watch, so they don't get misplaced. You may need to remove anything that contains metal, such as eyeglasses, dentures, or hearing aids, during the test.
