The waitlist for a Section 8 voucher in San Diego is currently 10 years, but other factors can encourage SDHC to prioritize your application. Federal Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Rental Assistance Rental housing assistance is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Because funding is limited, there is a wait list to receive federal rental assistance through SDHC. The average wait time is approximately 12 years.

Who is eligible? People who live or work in the City of San Diego. Individuals and families with annual income less than 80 percent of San Diego's Area Median Income (AMI) Veterans and active-duty military. Low-income seniors age 62 or older. Individuals with disabilities. Homeless families and individuals.

Income requirements for Section 8 in California are based on the median income of the county or metropolitan area where you are applying. Generally, you must have a household income that is below 50% of the median income for your area to be eligible for Section 8.

Your name is selected from the waiting list ing to the date and time of your application. Because of limited federal funding, you may wait 10 or more years before your name is selected from the waiting list.
