The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires employers to conduct inspections of all workplaces or tasks to determine if hazards are present that would require the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

A personal protective equipment (PPE) hazard assessment is an evaluation of your. workplace that helps you determine what hazards your employees are exposed to and. what PPE they need to protect themselves.

Last year OSHA expanded the scope of 29 CFR 1910.132, Subpart I, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to include: 1) conducting hazard assessment to determine type of PPE needed for a job task, 2) a written certification that the assessment was completed and, 3) that employees are trained in the use of the selected PPE.

Employers, supervisors, workers and other work site parties (for example, prime contractor, contractor), must know what the workplace hazards are in order to address them. Hazard assessments are a core part of every occupational health and safety program.

Employers are required to evaluate hazards in the workplace to determine if Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required. The employer must also certify, in writing, that a hazard assessment has been conducted. This worksheet can be used by an employer to help with the hazard assessment.

Employers must do a risk assessment. Some hazards may still remain after engineering controls and safe systems of work have been applied.

As part of CDC, The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is the U.S. Government agency responsible for the certification and approval of respiratory protective devices for occupational use.
