It's not particularly difficult, but it is tedious and incredibly time consuming. It tests your patience, and there is a lot of bureaucracy to deal with. The process for getting a long arms permit (shotgun & rifle) is now the same as getting a handgun permit. Long arms permits usually take anywhere from 9-12 months.

The registration of a rifle or shotgun can be accomplished by filling out the registration form PD 641-121 and mailing the two top copies (Green) to: License Division, Rifle/Shotgun Section, Room B11, 120-55 Queens Blvd., Kew Gardens, N.Y. 11424.

Applications must be submitted in person at the License Division, One Police Plaza Room 110, New York, NY or the Rifle/Shotgun Section, 120-55 Queens Blvd. Rm. B11, Kew Gardens, NY.

To be eligible to have a firearms license you: Must be a New York State resident.

You'll have to provide documentation to support your application when purchasing a handgun anywhere in New York State or a long gun in New York City. This documentation includes two recent photographs, a certified copy of your birth certificate, proof of citizenship, your Social Security card, and proof of residence.
