Your older home probably did not come with an inventory of all asbestos containing materials, but if the house in which you live was built before 1980, there's a good chance that you'll find asbestos containing materials in the walls, ceiling, roof or floors – or all of the above.

Although certain uses of asbestos were banned in the 1970s, and although very few if any building materials containing asbestos are still manufactured domestically today, asbestos has never been entirely banned in the United States and is still legally sold in commerce.

However, passing asbestos regulations proved to be an uphill battle against the asbestos companies who would lose profits if it were banned. In 1989, the U.S. Government banned certain asbestos building products, including flooring felt.

Asbestos popcorn ceilings were popular between 1945 and the 1990s. Asbestos was officially banned from ceiling coverings in 1973. However, previously manufactured asbestos-containing products may have been installed in homes into the 1990s.

Insulation and fireproofing containing asbestos were banned in the late 1970s, but it is still legal to purchase many other materials containing asbestos. However, NYCHA no longer purchases any materials that contain asbestos.
