Metro Vancouver is a federation of 21 municipalities, one electoral area, and one treaty First Nation that collaboratively plans for and delivers regional-scale services.

The majority of Metro Vancouver's operating and capital budgets are financed primarily through utility fees for our core services: drinking water supply, sewerage, and solid waste management.

Just under a year later, the regional district was renamed as the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) on 13 June 1968. In 2007, the GVRD applied to change its official legal name a second time to simply "Metro Vancouver", which was deemed more recognizable at the time.

Property taxes account for a small portion of the Metro Vancouver budget and support the regional parks system, as well as other services including air quality management and regional planning activities. Metro Vancouver Housing Corporation is a non-profit financed almost entirely through rents paid by tenants.

Three separate corporate entities operate under the name “Metro Vancouver” – the Metro Vancouver Regional District (MVRD); the Greater Vancouver Water District (GVWD); and the Greater Vancouver Sewerage and Drainage District (GVS&DD).

Vancouver is located on the mainland of North America, in the south-west corner of British Columbia, the westernmost of Canada's 10 provinces and three territories. Metro Vancouver is made up of 21 municipalities that occupy 2,930 square kilometres on and around the Fraser River delta.

The organization is governed by a Board of Directors of elected officials from each me​mber jurisdiction.

Metro Vancouver is a political body and corporate entity operating under provincial legislation as a 'regional district' and 'greater boards' that deliver regional services, policy, and political leadership on behalf of its members.
